Jean Antoine Lepine was a clockmaker in Paris. He was an eminent clock and watchmaker to Louis XV, Louis XVI and Napoleon I and worked as Caron et Lupine until 1769.
In 1760 he introduced the "Lepine Calibre"; in 1766 the use of a mainspring barrel, supported at one end only, leading with cyl. escapement. Described a repeating movement using rack in place of chain, in Membre de l'Academy des Science in 1766. Invented the virgule escapement and a keyless winding.
Acted as agent for Voltaire's workshop at Ferney circa 1770.
