The eight day movement is contained within the bronze sphere at the top of the pendulum on which are attached the gilt Roman hour numerals with pierced and engraved brass hands. the figure is embossed with the sculptor's name 'Aug. Moreau' and an applied brass plaque engraved "Brise D'Automne" par A. Moreau (med. d'Or). Auguste Moreau was born in Dijon in 1834 and died in 1917, he was the youngest son of painter and sculptor Jean-Baptiste Moreau. Auguste is particularly known for his Art Noveau style figures with his subjects being primarily young maidens sensuously clad in a swirling diaphanous dress. In 1861 Auguste made his debut at the Salon where he would exhibit regularly until 1913.

A repeater is a complication in a mechinacal watch or clock that audibly chimes the hours and often minutes. The repeating clock was invented by Edward Barlow in 1676 (England), his innovation was the rack and snail striking mechanism, which could be made to repeat easily and became the standard mechanism used in both clock and watch repeaters ever since. Repeater clocks often had a cord with a buttonon the end protruding from the side of the clock. Pulling the cord actuated the repeater mechanism.

The Deniere Factory of Art Bronzes began operating during the 1820's. Deniere was a renowned studio of French Bronziers who produced ornate art objects covered in a patina or gild bronze. The operate in Paris during the Directoire and the First French Empire eras. This 19th Century period in France is renowned for the many artist and sculptors who worked in bronze at the time. The firm had been suppliers to the Royal french Court before the revolution but before Napoleons first Empire.

A French patinated figural Mystery Clock. The classical figure (by Auguste Moreau, famous French sculptor, called Fleur de Mai or Mayflower)supporting the associated brass-cased drum shaped clock with gridiron pedulum and weighted bob with regulation, the single barrel movement with tic-tac escapement. Unusual clock since there is no evident connection between the mechanism and the hands. ± 75 cm.

Jean Antoine Lepine was a clockmaker in Paris. He was an eminent clock and watchmaker to Louis XV, Louis XVI and Napoleon I and worked as Caron et Lupine until 1769. In 1760 he introduced the "Lepine Calibre"; in 1766 the use of a mainspring barrel, supported at one end only, leading with cyl. escapement. Described a repeating movement using rack in place of chain, in Membre de l'Academy des Science in 1766. Invented the virgule escapement and a keyless winding. Acted as agent for Voltaire's workshop at Ferney circa 1770.
